Gym finally open!

Finally, after many nights of sleepless working, drilling and hammering, the gym in Tartu Ülikooli spordihoone is finally open! Grete Treier herself tried out the bikes and seemed quite pleased with the result.

Bikes will be free to all students of the University of Tartu, so go give them a try at TÜ spordihoone (Ujula 4)!

GeneratorBike prototype

How our nice and yellow concept bike was born…

We were at a startup event, listening and wondering about future plans. A lady from the Negavatt competition announced that deadline for their competition was near. Toomas laughed and suggested that we could build something like a gym that would generate electricity. At first, it sounded like a plan crazy enough and we decided to try and see what will happen…

After numerous selection processes our project was selected as one of the finalists. It dawned on us that now we actually have to build something as well.

Luckily for us, Toomas is also a blacksmith and skilled in the art of metalwork. He came up with a cool plan how to combine the frame of an old Classic bike and some gadgets to build our first prototype. After a lot of welding and waiting for the Chinese to send us the power generator, Toomas finally assembled the unit.

Getting our bike ready…

To get the prototype ready for the final event of Negavatt, Toomas painted it to a nice, sunny yellow colour. On a more technical side, we also added a battery to be able to save energy somewhere when not pedalling.

Also, we added an array of LED light bulbs to show what is possible to do with your own legs.

Final event of Negavatt

The deadline had fallen and final event of Negavatt where everyone is supposed to show what they built was very near.

We dragged the GeneratorBike to Genialistide Klubi, set everything up, connected the LED-s and hoped for the best.

There were also numerous other projects competing with us for the three available prizes. Luckily, we were pretty much the only team who had a nice big prototype that everyone could see, touch and even pedal on. Even our Minister of Environment Marko Pomerants liked it and generated some watts of his own 🙂

Still, the competition was fierce and we hoped for the best. We happened to be the first project that had to present and PowerPoint did not function as expected, but we managed to pull everything together quite well. After all the other presentations, the jury had a long meeting during which we were entertained by Chalice. Finally, jury was back and announced the results. Big was our surprise when we were called as winner of the 3rd place!!!
